I competed in informative speech for a few years. I have to say that the number one best topic for you to do is one that you care a lot about. I did my first informative speech on proper dog breeding, a topic that, as someone who shows dogs, was very close to my heart. My second one was on overweight people in the media. Usually the best informative speeches aren't about something everybody already knows about, but about something that is unusual and strikes a different chord with people. Pick something you really care about, and talk about it. If you really like making paper airplanes, show how your models are aerodynamic. If you really like jumpropeing, talk about the history of the activity. If you are good at drawing, teach people about how to draw best. If you know a lot about an unusual sport, teach everyone the rules. I once saw an excellent speech on the history of the straw. It was great because the girl brought humor and interest to a topic that she clearly found entertaining. The fact is that loaded topics like stem cell research tend to just upset people and are to arguable for informative speaking, and curring politics either bores or estranges everybody (and everybody will have thought of it). Not to mention we all had giant lectures in high school about drinking and driving and nutrition, and we all saw "An Inconvenient Truth" so Al Gore has given us all the info we want to know about the environment... ever. Fun topics that everyone can relate to make the best speeches, because after the 25 other speeches on windmills, yours is a relief.

In my class we had topics from diabetes awareness, to why breastmilk is better than formula. I personally did mine on the fast food industry relating to the number of calories are in combo meals. I think that anything related to health care since it is a hot topic these days are good for informative speeches. Don't forget to cite your sources and have plenty of bullet points of facts or statistics.

I would suggest, How to give an informative speech. Depending on how you did it, it could be pretty funny, and its an "out of the box" topic.

My mistake, I guess that would be an instructional speech.

Do it on the influence of social networking sites like facebook and myspace. There is a lot to talk about and it would be something the class is interested in.

In my experience, the best think you can do is to choose a topic you are familiar with. Nothing is more impressive then the ease in which a speaker familiar with their topic displays.
