I think to be a mathematician you have to be a perfectionist. You have to want to know every math problem as exact as possible. It's not enough to only know the first 100 decimal places of pi. I think to be a mathematician you need to have a drive to find and solve new problems. Things like the Riemann hypothesis have to fascinate you to a point where you can spend hour, days, even weeks trying to solve it. Even thought the greatest minds of the last century couldn't solve it. To be a mathematician you have to have a very logical and very creative mind. Solving problems is all about using logical reasoning in creative ways. Mathematicians will be good problem solves in everything not just math because of their mind set.

You can't generalize... I know all types of mathematicians. The math team at my school shows incredible diversity (personality-wise).

Mathematicians know that math is not just simply numbers... Its way more complex... Math is proving and theorems... not manipulating numbers... mathematicians know that... they are into things such as topology and geometric interpretations in the nth dimension...
