Because the appointed and selected Secretary of State was not doing her job and someone was actually doing it for her...It made them look bad. Bush has been in office for 7 years and Condoleezza Rice has been Sec. of State for 3 years now and they have just decided that peace should be a good idea. Its actually ironic that the U.S. is holding the peace talks on behalf of these two countries considering the position we are in right now in the middle east. He doesn't really want peace he is just trying to salvage what is left of his presidency. She also has done nothing as Sec. of State.

Condoleeza Rice is the Secretary Of State; that's in her job description. She is supposed to do that. Now Pelosi is the Speaker of The House, she has no business in going to a Syria and start promising stuff when she is in no position to offer anything without the Pesiden't approval.
So she got what she deserved.

Good question. Here is a good answer. The Executive Branch is where foreign policy decisions are to be made and foreign policy to be enforced. It is not the job of either the Legislative nor the Judicial Branches of Government.
So you see, Nancy Pelosi and any other elected official that is not part of the Executive Branch is not supposed to stick their nose into international relations without the expressed permission of the current Administration.
Ms. Rice, on the other hand, is the Secretary of State. She is part of the Executive Branch and is, in fact a member of the Presidents Cabinet. She is specifically tasked with such Foreign Policy matters. She serves by the will of the President and carries out the President's policies. That is her job.
I am glad to have the opportunity to straighten you out about this matter.

Because Condoleeza Rick is the official speaker for the United States foreign policy.
How would you like to be dealing with the United States, but they have TWO foreign policy rhetorics, one from the actual president and one from the looney left. How could another country believe what they said? It made us look like a banana republic.
EDIT: Sageands: That was not the context of this question. And there is one blaring difference as well with Newt. He went with the blessing of the administration and Gore had just been there and also expressed the same concern about Taiwan. This administration's policy was not to negotiate with Syria and asked Pelosi not to go. She went and did the complete opposite to *undermine* the administration. If you want to say they're both wrong, fine with me. But you're arguing down 'party line,' needless nonsense, tit for tat. What she did was wrong and everyone, Dem or Repub, should see that. It's not about parties -- it's about our country.

It's all very simple...
When the Nancy does the correct thing and engages the Syrians, the right wing nut cases scream bloody murder simply because they're jealous that they don't have the guts to talk to people.
When Condi does it, it's okay because someone in the AIPAC has put the blessing on it and has finally understood that Syria has to be involved for any peace plan to succeed.

It didnt drive the "right wing" crazy!! Pelosi and the rest of the DEMS were so giddy after their "victory" that they thought they could show the world that they were far superior in dealing with foreign relations than the US State Dept. Whose ever idea it was to allow her pull such a stunt is and still is a fool! ====No one knows your a fool until a fool opens his mouth [or puts a towel on her head]

Because it is part of her job!!!!! Look it up and see exactly what her job expectations are! Pelosi is only a spokesperson for Congress, she hasn't any authority or reason to be doing what Condi does. And Condi doesn't make a fool of herself and lie to those she has business with. Oh brother!

Condi Rice is the Secretary of State. It's HER job to deal diplomatically with other countries.
When Congressmen take it upon themselves to make foreign trips, they're actively undermining the Administration. That's bad, no matter if you support Bush's policies or not.
EDIT:
When Newt went to China, I was 15 years old. I probably didn't think an awful lot about it then.
