Libs will defend anyone won't they.... Lets educate here a little bit shall we.... and we will see if this is a guy you would want to represent you.
In 1942, 24-year-old Byrd joined the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), whose parades in Matoaka, West Virginia, he had witnessed in his childhood. He was unanimously elected Exalted Cyclops, or leader, of his local chapter.[4]
He participated in the KKK during World War II, holding the titles Kleagle (recruiter) and Exalted Cyclops. He did not serve in the military during the war, working instead as a welder in a Baltimore, Maryland shipyard, where he helped build warships.[citation needed]
Byrd commented on the 1945 controversy about racially integrating the military. Byrd, when he was 28 years old, wrote to segregationist Senator Theodore Bilbo, of Mississippi, vowing never to serve in such a military:
Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.[5]
He had earlier written Bilbo "I shall never fight in the armed forces with a ***** by my side".[6][7]
(Yeah.... racist hate like that just vanishes overnight huh?)
Oh... but there is more....
When running for the United States House of Representatives in 1952, he announced "After about a year, I became disinterested, quit paying my dues, and dropped my membership in the organization.
However, as late as 1946 or 1947, when he was 29 years old, he was still at least somewhat involved in promoting the KKK, as evidenced by a letter that he wrote to a Grand Wizard stating "The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia" and "in every state in the nation."[8]
Byrd joined with other Southern and border state Democrats to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1964, personally filibustering the bill for 14 hours (damn those civil rights for those less than human people)
Sure.... some of you Dem's didn't vote for him... but your elected officials sure find him good anough for high positions in the party.....
Byrd has been a member of the Senate Democratic leadership since 1967, when he was elected as secretary of the Senate Democratic Conference (caucus). He became Senate Majority Whip, or the second-ranking Democrat, in 1971. From 1977 to 1989 Byrd was the leader of the Senate Democrats, serving as Senate Majority Leader from 1977 to 1981 and 1987 to 1989 and as Senate Minority Leader from 1981 to 1987.
Did you guys ever complain to your Senators about that? Didn't think so.
BTW.... he still finds it appropriate to use the "N" word on National TV as he did so in 2001.

Wow... what a changed man. I have no problem with someone who actually changes. But, it would take a heck of a lot more than just a few years of leaving an extremist group like the KKK for me to elect him if even at all. That does not compare in the least with a college dabble in alcohol or drugs.
Can you please defend Ted Kennedy now for murdering a girl in his drunken stupor? I would like to see how you do that.

If Bush can stop being a coke snorting drunk driving fraternity pants man why can't Byrd stop being a Klansman?
Byrd has publically lamented his 1 year involvement in the Klan, heartily denounced the Klan and encourages young people to steer clear of the Klan but to get involved in politics.
We all make mistakes in our youth but it takes a strong man to admit to those mistakes, learn from them and move on to become a respectable and honest leader of his country.
