I'm stranded with horses (snowed in, castaway on an island perhaps) and I can only carry 10 items in my trusty medical kit. I found scissors, vetwrap, dressings/padding and a few hypodermics in my underwear - what else should I carry with me to cover all bases until help arrives? I have already compiled my own list but I want to see what everyone else has and their reasoning for packing it!

MR - and how does the granola bar help the horse in a critcal life threatening situation may I ask? I suppose it could choke on it instead of suffering? You forgot to pack the BBQ!

That's lurid - granola, underwear and booze! I'd swap the granola for smokes and underwear for tiramisu - really get the party going and then I wouldn't be worried about the horse!

Delta - I just knew it was only a matter of time before somebody asked

Mulereiner - do you see what you have started - they are all going to be sloshed drunk, gnawing on granola and power bars like David Hasselhoff trying to eat a burger with a doped, staggering horse in the background!

If you all intend getting plastered, you might want to borrow Advil from Delta and take some Alka Seltzer to settle down those power bars - thought of eating them makes me cringe.........

Oh wow, I'm so glad i have underwear in this perdicament ;)

I would have some Southern Comfort first and foremost to help me in this problem......

Then...

baling twine
electrical tape
granola bar
heat poncho thingy
cell phone :)

Oh, this was solely for horse stuff?? LOL sorry girl

It doesn't, but it goes good with southern comfort and underwear LOL

EDIT-- I am so happy to know that if I am stranded with my buddies here, we can form our own AA group :)

also kickingbear, your avatar, looks like Wilsonnnnnnn of 'Castaway" I just keep snorting everytime i see it!

A rope - always comes in handy.

Bottled water - serves as a sterile wound rinse.

Matches - so I stay warm. Wood ash also serves as a good wound dressing to fight bacteria - but you need a fire to get ashes.

I like a multi tool rather than scissors, that way I have a knife to cut with, but also a pair of pliers.

A flash light is always a plus too. Horse never seem to get hurt under perfect lighting conditions.

A rain poncho is good if you have the space.

For long camping trips I always have an extra blanket.

Oddly enough - Powerbars. You know, those nasty nutrition bars. I can live off of them, and my horses will even eat them.

Now the real question here is, why do you have hypodermic needles in your panties? ;)

Hm. Let's see. I'm assuming this medical kit is for both me and the horse?
All I can think of off the top of my head is:
Some sort of strong rope/string/twine
Swat and fly spray (because if I'm going to get stranded, it darn better be on an tropical island and you gotta keep those flies at bay!)
Pain relievers - both Advil for me and Bute for the horse - if we get horribly hurt at least we can be comfortable.

And of course, a change of undies since those syringes probably tore the old ones to shreds!

Actually, maybe I'll just switch out a bottle of tequila for the advil. haha. If I'm gonna be stranded on a tropical island, I want margaritas.

Bute
Banamine paste
gauze or fluff
vet wrap
Leatherman tool (has screwdriver, pliers, wire cutter, scissor etc. in one)
Antiseptic/biotic cream
Some kind of stitching kit "just in case"
Sedative/syringe
betadine solution
antibiotic pacs like Uniprim

Now that is just the med for the horse. Keep it in a bucket or pail type container that can double for water toting.

Balestring ( fix anything with that )
Vodka - apparently good as a sedative for the horse too
sanitary towels - very handy as emergency wound dressings ! ( true)
sudocrem (#1 first aid item in every stable round here)
tube of superglue

My ever handy Leather-man tool<-- I love that thing
Rope
water
blanket
peroxide
flare gun
power bars-- good idea kicking bear!
vet rap
halter/lead rope would be good, don't ya think?
matches/lighter
Maybe I would switch that peroxide for some Captain Morgan, at least it could still be a form of antiseptic.. and I wouldn't be so stressed out! ;-)
