To a child I would say:
When something does something to something else. Like, heat makes us warm (heat has an impact on us). The funny guy makes us laugh (the funny guy has an impact on us).

Just tell him/her, "that the loud noise you hear when you drop something heavy and it hits the floor is due to the impact of it hitting the floor," while dropping something. The word has other meanings as a verb like "press close" and "have an effect on."

Good luck with your child's whys and whats, good mental health, peace and Love!

Impact is how you feel when something is done to you or when you experience something that plays on your emotions.

Ex: Watching a sad movie will make me feel sad. That move had an impact on me.

(I hope that made sense, kids have the best questions that screw us grown-ups up.)
