I believe because they have a similar number of valence electrons.

Sodium and Potassium have similar chemical properties is because thy are in the same column so they have the same amount of valence electrons and they are all alkaline metals. I hope this works for you.

The periodic table is periodic precisely because element behavior appears to be cyclic (=periodic). Many researchers contributed to the discovery that it is the electron configuration in an atom (element) that defines chemical properties.

According to quantum mechanics, atoms have a limited number of electronic configurations. Once you reach the limit of configurations in one "layer" of electrons, you start over again. And here is where the periodic nature kicks in. Let's say you look at Na and K - they both have single, unpaired electrons sitting in s-orbitals. They aren't totally identical because K has one more inner layer than Na. But both have the same outer-shell electron configuration. And that is why their chemical properties are so similar.

When you look at a properly aligned periodic table, you see the elements aligned according to their orbital population in their outer shells. And for that reason, you ALSO see similar elements aligned one above the other.

Halogens above halogens, inert gases above inert gases, metals above metals (for the most part - because in the case of metals, size matters.)

They are both used for the same kinds of things and when inserted into the body work together to target certain areas.
