Why do people socialize at the checkstand when there is a line waiting?

I will go to the post office. The line is very long. Service is slow. People are at the counter laughing and yukking it up. I am at the checkstand at the supermarket. It's a long wait. The checker and customer are catching up on old times as we die of old age waiting in line. Is this the new way of dealing with overcrowded urban areas? You just pretend that you are the only person on planet earth?

It is always when your in a hurry too, notice that. Any other time it may not bother you. haha I know what you mean.

it is the insensitivity to people that is becoming more and more prevalent in society. My personal opinion is that people are so self involved that they don't even notice, or care to notice those around them. I worked with the auto insurance industry for several years and through dealing with people who had been in accidents i came to conclude that most of them were driving and not being aware of their surroundings, as well, they were incapable of taking responsibility for their failures. Selfishness and irresponsiblity are the reasons for this phenomenon. Although, i do think that with elderly people it is more a loneliness thing as well as not adjusting to the changing pace of our times. We are used to rush rush rush, whereas 50 or 60 years ago the pace was slower, and some people just fail to adjust.

I find these people to be extremely inconsiderate as well. Sometimes I want to say, "Excuse me, your turn is up." I haven't actually said that yet, but I've come close. I'm afraid if I say it I'll get shot or something.

Apparently, some people feel like an entertaining conversation is worth making you wait.
