Can someone help me analyze the name Winston Smith? All I really know is that Smith was a commonly used surname. Why did he choose this name in particular?

I agree with the previous answerer--Winston just so happened to be the first name of the Prime Minister of England during WWII.

And you understand the name Smith is a very common surname--and makes Winston an "any man" in his society. It is like how we use John and Jane Doe...it is a name, yet it is generic.

According to Wikipedia, "His name has become a metaphor for the man in the street, the unwitting and innocent victim of political machination." Also, "the character was born about 1945 and Orwell chose his name from Winston Churchill with Smith being used because it is a very common surname."

Unfortunately, Mr. Orwell died a while ago and left no notes. Perhaps the recent Prime Minister in the UK was WINSTON Churhill? perhaps.....
