Denim refers to the fabric and Jeans refers to pants made out of denim. So actually, Denim can mean either pants, skirts, jackets, shirts and shorts. Jeans mean specifically denim pants.

Jeans is one garment made of denim. Denim is the name of the fabric that is used to make jeans, jackets, etc. The word denim is used interchangeably with jeans in such a manner that people refer to jeans as denim, which is wrong.
