personally I have always considered Sonny James as straight up country even though he did have several that crossed over to pop. He's one of the legends in my book. My favorite song by Sonny is "When The Snow Is On The Roses"

On the pop charts, his best known song is probably "Young Love". It did reach #1 but Tab Hunter also did a version of it and had the bigger hit.

He did lots of country. It wasn't his fault that most of the songs released as singles in the late 60s/early 70s were covers of pop or R&B songs. "That's Me Without You," which I think was his first hit, couldn't be classified as anything but country.
