I have two guppies...I got them as a gift when I was like 10 and the 2 I have are the original guppies great-great-great-grand daughters...anyway, they are completely gray and plain and that is how I knew then were female but...what species of guppy are they?

Thanks!

color is not acctulaly how you know the sex of a guppy, as the males can be the same color as the females, and some females can be just as bright as the males. the best way to tell is size and body shape. males are small with longer tails, females are larger and thicker with small tails. but i digress...

if they are plain gray, you probably have 'feeder guppies'.
all guppies are the same species they just come in different colors. like a black lab, a golden lab, and poodle are all just dogs.

Unless they're Endler's livebearers (and there's even some doubt about whether these should be considered a separate species) all guppies are the same species, Poecilia reticulata. What I think you mean is the variety.

These links will show you some of the varieties: http://www.guppywest.com/gallery.htm , http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_Fancy_Guppy_Poecilia_reticulata.php and you can always look up guppies on aquabid (http://www.aquabid.com/ ) to see some of the newer strains being developed.

Unfortunately, females are more difficult to determine the variety of, since they may not show the coloring of males.

you will probably have to put a picture. they might just be old. i have only seen male and female (plain) guppies before.
