Back in the early 1800's many people had orchards on their farms and the kids would bring in apples for a treat for the teacher. Some teachers got enough to be able to bake pies without having to purchase any bushels.

jonny apple seed started it all. you see, his family was so poor that all they had were apples. nothing else, no house, no shoes, no real food, just apples. they had so many apples that jonnys parents gave him a big basket of them with the instructions to dump them in the river or something. but jonny couldent because he was late for school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so whilst waiting for teacher, jonny figured he could get rid of some of the apples by handing them out. all his classmates just threw them away, but the one for teacher remained... thus to this day, children everywhere bring apples to their teachers in honor of jonny appleseed. the end.
