Boston is an early party city. Most places close shortly after 1; only a few stay open until 2. By 1:15, people line up at those bars spots to get the last calls from the bartender.

I would guess that they type of bars he is going to in Boston "improper" (LOL) are the ones that close at 2am. Tell him to buy a bottle of spring water and advil before he gets on the bus. Oh, he might want to grab coffee, too. However, other travelers visiting Boston should call ahead if they know where they want to drink. We roll up the sidewalks early in some areas.

Depends on which bar. Massachusetts law does not allow liquor served after 2:00 am. Which means last call about fifteen to thirty minutes before.
