I broke my ankle 10 years ago. Aside from the fact that my foot fell sideways, there was no pain, UNTIL the 3 hour surgery to put in the screws and metal plates to hold my foot onto the bottom of my leg. I was wheel chair bound for 3 months, then on crutches for 7 or 8 weeks and could finally walk on it. All total I was out of work for 6 months. Trust me the pain in the beginning is EXCRUCIATING. I was in a fracture boot for 5 months. Many doctors do not even use casts any more. It would be easier to wrap your ankle up and use crutches, tell people you sprained it. You will get over crutches very quickly.

If the doctor gives you a walking cast you wont need crutches... but more the doc will give you a cast and then you will need crutches....... they probably wont let you out early but the teacher in your next class will probably ignore the fact if you are late getting to the class..... as for the pain.... the cast itself does not hurt..... getting the bone set should be a bit painful if they don't load you down with pain killers..... but what will happen as that you foot and leg where the cast is will start itching like crazy and you can't scratch it..... I had a friend who had broken his leg and he had a full cast.... he ended up drilling holes every so often in the cast so that he could slide the metal part of a hanger in and scratch where it itched.... hope everything goes well with the cast......

Dear, I've broken over 60 bones due to a weird bone disorder that even the Mayo Clinic could notrecognize.
Getting a cast is not painful. I think that's your main concern. If anything, the bones will be held in correct alignment and therefore the acute pain you felt when it broke will be greatly reduced. In fact, you probably won't feel any.
Of course you are going to need crutches because you will be instructed not to put ANY pressure on that cast, unless the MD thinks it's OK.
I use a cane now. In fact I design my canes. But for long intervals every now and then, I have to use a walker. Now THAT'S a bummer.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

My ex tore ligaments and whatnot in his ankle (Including bone). He had to have screws surgically put in. But if your's is a clean break, you shall be fine! Yes, you will DEFINATELY have crutches for at least 6 weeks! Good luck to you!!! And enjoy the meds!!!

Yes you will need crutches.Yes they might let you out early. They will put your leg over a thing that will hold your leg up.Then they will put a long stocking on you, then they will wrap it with cotton, then the cast material. You will lie there until it hardens, not very long.No it does't hurt. You can get them in so many different colours now even glow in dark.

You'll be fine! Now you can do the "bunny hop"! Crutches are also a defense weapon in case anybody tries to 'mug' you! Good Luck, Hopalong!
