a cat. they are very easy to take care of and fun to have. all you have to do is feed them and have a litter box. it will definitely help their skills with dealing with animals and having responsibility just make sure to keep it their responsiblilty!

a laptop is also good too but since the child is only 11 they may not know how to work it good or really need it for a couple years and by that time it will be outdated. its best to wait for a year or two.

also a garnet ring is a nice thought but if you get her this she will most likely loose it or not fully appreciate it. my mother had the same problem with me and got me a nice ring when i was 12 and i loved it however i ended up loosing it and not fully understanding how nice it was. also best to keep that present for a year or two as well.

Pets are TERRIBLE gifts. (a nice thought but owning a pet is a big commitment and it usually works out badly for both the pet and the unexpected new care-giver - have you ever seen an animal shelter just after Christmas? - a very sorry sight)

A laptop isn't a bad idea, though whatever happened to getting a kid a bike? or a sled? or skis? or a snowboard? or a new pair of skates? (or a surf board if you're not in a cold area) Something to encourage them to be active is tops on my list.

If those three options are the only ones you are considering, I would say a laptop.

If not, here are some neat choices:

- Ipod
- Nintendo Wii
- PSP or DS
- Calvin and Hobbs Comic Book Whole Set (I would REALLY suggest this one. It is for about $100, but has 3 really nice hardcover comic books {each more than 200 pages}.)

mhhnnn...... i would say a cat, but if your household can handle it. a laptop might not be too severe but if your child does not know how to use it then why? im a 13 year old and if i were your child, then i would pick a revelancy of a cat 49.5% and laptop 49.5% dont get me wrong, but i know this is equal to 99%. actually, this decision is hard...
