A famer has dogs and chikens. Hi dogs and chickens have a total of 148 legs and 60 heads. HOW MANY DOGS AND HOW MANY CHICKENSDOES THE FARMER HAVE?

c+d=60

c=60-d
2(60-d)+4d=148
120-2d+4d=148
120+2d=148
2d+120-120=148-120
2d=28
d=14

c+14=60
c+14-14=60-14
C=46
46 chickens and 14 dogs

Solve second equation for either c or d. I like dogs better (kinda scared of chickens) so I will kill off the chickens (hehehe)

c = 60 - d

Substitute "60 - d" in the first equation wherever you have a "c."

2(60 - d) + 4d = 148
120 - 2d + 4d = 148
120 + 2d = 148
2d = 28
d = 14

c + d = 60
c + 14 = 60
c = 46

Check your work....

2(46) + 4(14) = 148
92 + 56 = 148
148 = 148 Woohoo!!!!

46 chickens and 14 dogs. Great problem except for the dogs are outnumbered by the stoopid chickens.

d=dogs

2c + 4d = 148
c + d = 60

solve for one of the animals:

i'm going to solve for c...

2c = 148 - 4d
(2c)/2 = (148 - 4d)/2
c = 74 - 2d

then replace C in your second equation...

c + d = 60
(74 - 2d) + d = 60
74 - 2d + d = 60
74 - d = 60
- d = 60 - 74
-d/-1 = -14/-1
d = 14

replace d with 14.

c + d = 60
c + 14 = 60
c = 60 - 14
c = 46

check your work with the legs...

2 (46) + 4(14) = 148
92 + 56 = 148
