Use substitution.

Take first equation; throw out "b" and put in "a + 6b" since they weigh the same.

3a + a + 6p = 10p
4a + 6p = 10p
4a = 4p
a = p
Apples weigh the same as plums (some pretty stinking big plums or some itty bitty apples, if you ask me).

Substitute p for a in your second equation.

p + 6p = b
7p = b

Seven plums weigh the same as one banana.

b=a+6p
3a+b=10p

3a+a+6p=10p
4a=4p
a=p
therefore since a=p then 1 apple and 6 plums balance a banana then 7 plums could also balance 1 banana since a=p

first of all, you spelled algebra wrong

you have a good start
from the first equation, you can get b=10p-3a
you can then set the b's equal to each other to get
10p-3a=a+6p
simplifying that would get you 4p=4a, and thus p=a
sub in p for a in the 2nd equation (a+6p=b), and then you get
7p=b
so the answer is 7 plums
