on the elliptical my feet are starting to hurt.
Do I need new shoes?
smaller? bigger?
more cushion? less cushion?

You could probably use some more cushion, but it really depends on the part of your foot that hurts. You may be wearing crappy socks, too. If your socks bunch or if they have an "old towel" feel on the inside, invest in some socks designed for runners from an athletic shop, or go to J.C. Penney and get some Gold Toe athletic socks. But before paying anything, do the following:
Lift your heals and spend a little time every couple minutes on only your toes (think: running like a sprinter).
Pedal backwards to take the pressure from the ball of your foot to the heel (and get a workout on a whole new part of your legs/butt).

Mine used to hurt on that also, I loosened up my shoe laces and that helped me.
