1) The prices of mitts really vary depending on what brand and if you want a really good one.
2)You can practice at home on your swinging by using a bat weight and working on your form. For fielding, some inexpensive rebound nets are good for grounders. You don't need anyone else for that.
3) I don't understand your question. If you mean the entire game and every part, it is VERY hard to summarize up into a few paragraphs.

Softball mitts run from $35 to over $250 each - I would find a good outfielders glove to start. Any decent sporting goods store will carry them and help you with the fit. Do not let them talk you into the big bucks gloves, you don't need it.

As for practice - Go to a good batting cage or baseball school and take a few hitting lessons. They can run $15 to $25 for 15 minutes to 1/2 hour - but can be worth it. Work on the basics - making contact and good swing mechanics.

As for back yard practice - get someone to throw to you - toss you ground balls and fly balls to work on catching and throwing.

There are links below that will help you with the fundamentals. For the most part- the basics of the game are the same as baseball - hit the ball, catch the ball, throw the ball, score runs, make outs.

High school softball plays with 9 players, just like baseball. the biggest difference is that they pitch underhand (usually rather fast) and the field is smaller - 60 foot bases instead of 90 feet, pitchers rubber is 43 ft instead of 60 ft 6 " - there are some others.

Talk to your potential coach, find out if he/she has any voluntary practices or camps that they can recommend.

I am not sure how mitts cost but check with your local sports store. You can try to see if you can play it in your back yard, and it is pretty close to baseball, expect for I believe that the mount and home plate are closer to each other, and well it seems like to me, that more women play softball then men. The site that I have in the source box, should give you a better idea of how it is played. And if you have any friend(s) that are more expeierenced then you, see if they will help you out.

Gloves are anywhere from about 35 to 200 dollars dpending on the type and style that you want.
There are practice tees you can buy for batting practice. You can also buy a practice net that "throws" the ball back to you to practice throwing and catching.
