It's too early for us to put up our tree. We'll start putting up some of our Christmas decorations this weekend, December 1st. Our first decoration is our Advent candle set. Our tree usually goes up a week or two before Christmas...but we've put it up as late as Christmas Eve. We play our holiday CDs and MP3s and I make mulled, spiced, apple cider with some apricot brandy on the side...yum! The tree comes down on Epiphany, January 6.
Rusty Trombone Jr., I think it's sad when people discussing harmless, happy, traditions is perceived as insensitive. I'd much rather read about and acknowledge differing traditions than take offense at them. This past Tishri my neighbor's daughter was able to come home for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. My neighbor was thrilled to have her daughter home for the holidays. Because we have witnssed and discussed our holidays and traditions with each other for so many years; I had enough information to bring them a treat: I found some locally produced honey and some lovely apples....and delivered a nice package that we set up for the daughter's arrival. These types of caring acts with each other can't happen if we spend too much time objecting to the celebrations of those different than us.

Nope, and sad to say, I won't being putting one up this year either as I just don't have the room for one in this tiny 8 X 30 travel trailer. One day when I have a bigger place to live in, I will put my tree back up. When I was putting a tree up, it went up the first weekend in Dec. and came back down the 2nd of Jan. I would always play Christmas music while putting the tree up, decorating it and the house. The Christmas music puts me in the Christmas mood. Then play the Christmas music when I am cleaning the house, working on crafts that will be gifts, or wrapping gifts.
I could play Christmas songs now here, but that would only make me more depressed now as there will be no tree or decorations put up this year.
All in all, I really do enjoy Christmas. Seeing all the lights and decorations in town.

No... I lost all but 2 of my Christmas decorations to my X. He has them stored somewhere where I'm sure they will never be used just so I can't have them! There were so many, and many were gifts from friends... I had a girl friend who would give me one of those beautiful big Santa's every year... I bet I had a dozen of them! All lost to me now because of greed. But I always waited until after my son's birthday, as it is in the first part of December so it wouldn't take anything away from his special day!
If I put up a tree this year it will all be from scratch... I just don't know if I'm even going to do it! I use to really love my decorations! Maybe I will just drink brandy and think about it!

Darlin', I put that sucker up the day after Thanksgiving. (My tradition!) Took most of three days to do ALL the decorating throughout the home. A glass of brandy kept me going throughout all of it (okay, more like half the bottle), and the Christmas tunes were playing. The tree will stay up through the 12 days of Christmas, English tradition. It won't come down until after January 6th, which is the 12th day of Christmas. Have a holly jolly and a ho-ho one.

My tree has been up for a couple of days now...but I haven't decorated it yet, only because I was reading in the pet section on here that if you have a young pup it's a good idea to let it get used to it being there with no decs on it and by the time you put them on, the theory is it wont be that bothered about it and not destroy all your hard work...lol...I'm yet to find that one out, but when I do decorate it I love to have a tipple and there is always a Christmas film on in the background

You're kidding right?
I usually haul the tree out of storage in the attic when all three grandsons are at school. Then I put the tree together and get the lights strung and the bows tied on (I use that squished paper "ribbon" that looks somewhat like crepe paper for bows on my tree), and then I wait until the boys are home to finish it...they get to hang all of the ornaments.
I actually found tinsel icycles this year, and am looking forward to being able to use those again!
And all of that will get done round about the middle of December--no earlier.
Sapphire--couldn't you set up a tree with lights outside on your little deck beside your front door, and then have a little table model inside? It is a lot better than having no tree at all!!

I will put the tree up the first week of December. My fiance will help me set the tree up but the decorating is all up to me. I also decorate our home but I don't overdo it. We bought an artificial tree last year, but this year, I'd love to have a real tree. They're selling Blue Spruce Christmas trees out front of the grocery store where I shop. They smelled so good today, as I took a look at them. They're selling for $24.95. I haven't bought a real tree in years & I'm not sure if that's expensive or not.
*rusty.....If you're Jewish, then I guess this question wasn't meant for you was it? Why didn't you just pass it by?

I understand what you are saying, the tradition was adopted by the early church to assist in getting pagans to convert. Many were druids who believed nature to be holy, so the tree was adopted to bring them into the fold. It may be a bit wierd, but it's so beautiful when it's all done... but for me I won't use a cut tree, I don't see the point, I use either an artifical tree or a potted tree, if I am unable to plant it myself I give it to someone else who can, or even take it up into the nearby mountains and plant it. It's nice to give back.

Yes our tree is up and decorated, along with a huge Christmas village my wife had before we were married. She had the village up before the tree was, and I was going to surprise her and have the tree up and decorated before she woke up (she works nights). I had the tree up and was almost done with the decorations when a leg broke off the stand and over it went! Needless to say she woke up about a minute later and we both had a good laugh over it. After getting it in a different stand, it looks beautiful now with all blue lights on it.
We are ready for Jesus' birthday!

Normally, I put the tree and decorations up on the first weekend in December. Sometimes I play music -- usually, the radio is on.
