you got one equation right..good.
but that was from second statement of question. first simple statement gives us 6x=12y.
now u have two equatios( relations ) for two unknowns. This can be solved.
In such questions u must have same number of equations as unknowns. break question language into separate information for finding separate equations. sometime a single word gives you clue for one of the equation( second number is double of another.... x=2y)
Just be patient and confident..and do it.... keep signs correct!

12x+24y=12
6x=12y
x=2y

12x+24y=12 divide by 12 to get the other equation

x+2y=1
x=2y
then substitute
2y+2y=1
4y=1
y=1/4

x+2(2/4)=1
x+1/2=1
x=1/2
1 grapefruit costs .50 =x then oranges would be .25 since x=2y .25* 2=.50 6 @ .50=3 12 @ .25 =3 12@,50=6 24@.25=6
12 @.50 +24(.25y)=12 because 6+6=12

Fabulous start. Your second equation is "6x = 12y." You can reduce that by dividing both sides by 6 so x = 2y.

This is a system of equations.

12x + 24y = 12 (I am going to divide everything by 12 so all numbers will be easier to deal with.)

x + 2y = 1 and
x = 2y

Use substitution in the first equation (replace x with 2y).
2y + 2y = 1
4y = 1
y = 0.25

One orange costs $0.25. Go back to the original equation that you came up with. and substitute 0.25 for y.

12x + 24(0.25) = 12
12x + 6 = 12
12x = 6
x = $0.50

One grapefruit costs $0.50.

the other equation you need is 6x=12y; which simplifies down to x=2y. You can plug this into the equation that you already had.
