teachers=t (since there r 26 times as many students)
students=26t
900-9=891 seats occupied

26t + t = 891
27t = 891
t=33

students= 26(33)=858

26x+y=891

There is one variable needed because we know there were 26x as many students than teachers

26x+x=891
27x=891
x=33 therefore 891-33=858 students 33 teachers

33x26= 858
