Spot Marks the X~I think this is the dog that was in "Down & Out in Beverly Hills".
The Ugly Dachshund
White Fang (1991)
White Fang 2: Myth of the White Wolf
It's a Dog's Life (1955)~I love this film! It's told from the perspective of a bull terrier, taking him from puppyhood to dogfighting matches to finding his father. It's not done in a "kiddish" style; there are some rough moments. That's why it stands out for me. I think the narrator's voice sounds so much like Frank Sinatra's, but it's Vic Morrow~Jennifer Jason Leigh's father!
Never Cry Wolf~Charles Martin Smith is studying wolves in this film based on a true story.

HORSES
Hidalgo
Black Beauty (1994)
Flicka (original and remake)
Miracle of the White Stallions~based on a true story
Phar Lap
Champions
Seabiscuit
Smoky (1946)
The Black Stallion
The Black Stallion Returns
The Red Pony (1949)

MISCELLANEOUS
Animals Are Beautiful People~It's a documentary, but it's beyond that, too. James Uys was attacked because people felt that this wasn't a scientific approach. Who cares? It's so much fun!
Cry of the Penguins~OK, so, they're birds. But, this film is wonderful! John Hurt is a young man who tries to show off to a girl (Hayley Mills) and ends up being stuck doing solitary research in arctic weather.
The Bear
So Dear to My Heart (1948)~about a little boy and his pet lamb
The Yearling~original and TV movie//Both are excellent!
Fly Away Home
Mighty Joe Young (original and remake)
Gorillas in the Mist
Congo

It's animated, but have you seen "Watership Down"? It's a remarkable film. I've heard that "Plague Dogs" is as fine a film though I haven't seen it. Both are from Richard Addams' novels.

If you like animal movies, definitely check out March of the Penguins. It will be in the documentary or special interest section of your local video store.

Another one coming out this Tuesday is Arctic Tale. It took 15 years to make and it centers on the lives of a baby polar bear and a walrus pup.

Both films are well done, entertaining, funny and have wonderful messages about the resilience of animals and the miracles of nature.

Enjoy!

How about: Dancing Feet (it's animated, but has a real good message about being different and also about pollution) or Milo and Otis or Eight Below.

Danger Erin listed many good ones. Among them, I'd definitely check out Marley & Me (2008), as well as Free Willy (1993) , if you haven't seen them. "Dolphin Tale" (2011) is another one--a "modern" version of Free Willy, in my opinion. Of course, I'm a sucker for funny monkeys but I can't think of any movies off the top of my head where they don't speak.
