I have Windows Vista on my new Gateway laptop. I have tried to connect it to a Wireless network, and it has worked previously, but it has just started to stop working. It tells me that I am connected to this network, and that I have a connection, but I'm not connected to the internet. Then a message box pops up, and says that there is already another computer on this network that has the exact same IP address. What gives? And how should I resolve this issue? I have run all diagnostic features Microsoft recommends, including unplugging my router for a prolonged amount of time. PLEASE HELP ME.

Is this YOUR wireless network? You said a wireless network so I am just checking? If its not yours, you may be being blocked. Since it is illegal to connect to a network without permission the owner may have taken steps to boot you off!

If it is YOUR wireless network, I would tell you to reboot the router. Sometimes DHCP pools get corrupted and they attempt issuing the same IP to two machines (which is what your message is telling you.) In these cases, reboot the router will clear the tables and allow machines to pull new addresses! (Just unplug it, wait 60 seconds, and reconnect it.)

Try Changing the wireless channel. Sometimes wireless interference will cause non-connections and a channel change correct this. (Also be sure you have a UNIQUE SSID - if you left your default LINKSYS, DLINK etc your machine may be seeing two routers with the same SSID and simply can not connect since it can't find the right one!)

It could be either a neighbor is connected to your wireless router and is messing up your connection getting an IP. Or you own 2nd computer has an IP assigned to it that is causing the problem. Shut down every computer at home and secure your network router. Then connect your laptop

Are you using a static IP on your computer? It's possible someone else is using your IP, maybe your neighbour?

Try changing or creating a static IP for your computer, and check on the router (using the web interface) to see who is connected to your network.
