There is no real wild west anymore. Better off in Vegas. Not sure what you think the wild west is like. There is nothing like the movies shows it anymore. There may be pockets of areas through out the US that has wild horses and cowboys or what ever you think it could be like. Stick with Mum's idea ... go to Vegas and experience it.

The area surrounding Vegas was considered part of the Wild West. 25 miles west of the Strip is a place called Bonnie Springs near Red Rock Canyon; it's a Old West town where there are reinactments of shootouts etc. Your mum can still enjoy the nearby Vegas attractions.

The wild west that you see in the movies exsisted mostly in movies only. That is not what life was like in the west in the old days.

The best that you may find is by visiting ghost towns.

Visit this website to find ghost towns near Las Vegas

All of those ghost towns are all within a 90 minute drive.

You may be disappointed that the wild west really is more legend than fact, but the ghost towns are really very interesting in seeing what life in the the American west is like.

Las Vegas is pretty much in the middle of the wild west. Desert all around.

There actually is a hotel/casino called the "Wild Wild West" it's located at 3330 W Tropicana.

But, I think the "Wild West" you are speaking of died about 1900 - You can still visit old ghost towns - There is a really neat one just south of Laughlin in Arizona I just can't recall the name of the place.

And of course you can visit the location(s) in Utah where John Ford filmed many of the great westerns. awesome sights. I have distant relatives who live around Moab Utah and they would play "extras" in those movies.
