as if to say "get over it, country"! i'm sure the people who lost family and friends that day really felt like shopping.

"get your comfort and return to normality from shopping, spending money, things. it's on sale now."

what a comforting reassuring thought Mr President!

While historians will have a field day about 'GWB' word choice for all of eternity, there is merit in the idea behind the words.

One of the important things in responding to terror attacks is not letting them affect the nature of your life. If you look at Great Brittan, Israel, or other areas that have been habitually targets of terrorist style attacks, you will see a resiliency. Market bombing on Tuesday? Within a week its back up and running. America could not let the September 11th attacks dramatically alter American life.

The other thing to keep in mind is that a healthy economy is at the corner stone of stable countries. In modern times, the ruling party will often retain control if the economy is at least stable. With economic instability comes political instability. Look at the 1930's in Europe or 1917 Russia. It is in the best interest of the nation to keep spending at a normal level and not resort to an economic siege mentality.

No one said 'don't grieve', or 'the deaths of your loved ones is insignificant'. However part of grieving is moving on. A common message of grief counselors is to keep or return to your routines.
