WAAAAY to broad a question.

There are a LOT of different types of lawyers.

Prosecutors prosecute crimes on behalf of the government.
Criminal defense lawyers defend people accused of crimes.
Contract lawyers draw up or review contracts between parties.
Personal injury lawyers try to get compensation for people who've been injured by someone else, or defend people who're accused of injuring someone else.
Real Estate lawyers handle the paperwork for the buying and selling of real estate.
Labor Law lawyers handle the relationships between employers and employees.

and there are many, many more.

It depends on the lawyer's field of expertise. For example, a criminal lawyer defends an accused person, a civil lawyer handles civil lawsuits such as collection of money based on a loan agreement, an immigration lawyer handles the cases of those people having problems with the INS, and so forth and so on.
