Jet boats are fun, don't get me wrong. They're a blast to tool around in. You can ski off of them quite easily, they throw a small wake and are fairly easy to handle around the docks and beaches. However, the cons, in my opinion, outweigh the pros. They are typically louder than an I/O, come with two cycle motors (up until around 2006 models, then you could get a 4 cycle) and, besides having a jet mounted to them, the motors themselves are just outboard motors. If you have a 200 HP Mercury Jet outboard, that motor will lose anywhere from 15 to 25 percent of it's power thrusting that water out, compared to a 200 HP Mercury Outboard motor losing only 5 to 10 percent through the gear reductions and propeller. Jets tend to use more gallons per hour on average vs. outboards or I/O's, and if you get a "cheaper" jet boat, they porpose when they're going down the lake ALL THE TIME. You want a good jet boat, try to find a Sea Ray F-16 XR. It's well built, has a Mercury powerplant and is easy to maintain and handle. Sea Doo makes a good jet boat as well, but they tend to porpose! I have a customer that has a Sea Doo that we installed Lenco electric trim tabs on, and it goes good now! My recommendation would be that unless you NEED a jet boat for size or draft, get an I/O.

I just sold my yamaha jet boat and I must say that the jet boat is very cool, but u must remember that u have to have thrust to turn. Also, I think that the jets are better because they cant chew u up or get torn off in the shallow areas.
Good Luck boating,

A jet is good for fast shallow water> RPM are higher about 1 thousand for the same speed as prop>out drive repairs expense>Can't leave jet in salt water for long> Salt eat it up>
Control is terrible reverse is worse>

It depends on where you are going with it. There a plenty of places that a jet can go that would rip the prop off.
Props are more efficient - more go with less power.
