Just set up a proportion: ratio of diameters of sun to earth equals ratios of diameters of models of sun to earth:

870,000/8000 = 24/d and solve for d, diameter of earth model, by cross multiplying.

24 cm = 8000 miles
8000 miles = 24 cm
1 mile = 24/8000 cm
870,000 miles = (24/8000)(870,000)=2610 cm

This is a basic ratio.

870,000 is to 24cm as 8000 is to X
Cross multiply.
8000 x 24 / 870,000 = .22cm
