I have been writing poetry for a while and I've been told by friends and teachers that some of it is pretty good. It's always been my dream to publish something. Do you know where I can publish my stuff? I don't mind if it's a contest or something, or even an obscure journal or magazine. I just hope to show my poetry to someone who can tell me if it's really good and maybe see my name in print. Thanks.

You have a few options available. You can go to your local bookstore and buy a copy of Poet's Market by Writers Digest Books. It's the most comprehnsive resource available for poets and writers. The next thing you can do is google online magazine or poetry ezines and submit to them. Go to http://yasouezine.tripod.com which is my ezine and submit there. I'd like to see your work.

Thanks.

Whatever you do, avoid poetry.com. They're a scam. They publish so much crappy poetry that your poems, even if they're good, will be looked upon as crap if you publish them there. Here's some useful information:

The best way to find places to publish your poetry is to read a lot of poetry magazines and find one where you think your writing would be at home. Here's one of the many available listings of poetry journals:

Your first step is to copyright each poem you are going to put up earlier than filing it! There is a price in step with poem or choice of poems on the Library Of Congress--both snail mail or on-line----then pay attention to filing to legitimate poetry magazines,as the opposite answerer mentioned.
