Looks like you got an essay question.
Retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation and protection of society are all purposes of the criminal law system and have been argued about in courthouses and capitols for centuries.
All of them are worthy goals, at least in the eyes of their champions.
Just say something like: Deterrence is one of the foundations of criminal law. The principle is that if we set and publicized punishment for crimes, then anyone think of committing a crime would be less likely to do so out of fear that they would get caught and punished. . . .

these are the primary aspects to look at when giving a convict a punishment
you forgot to put in segregation
to rehabilitate a convict is to fx them and get them ready to go back into society have a job and not be a threat to society
deterrence is to scare the convict from re-offending and committing another crime by inflicting a punishment on them
retribution is a legal term for revenge. it is just to show the public no tollerence for crimes
segregation is to remove a potentially dangerous criminal off the streets and into a controlled environment
these factors are all created so lower the recidivism rate in a country
(thats how many convicts re-offend)
Canada is a prime example of a successful sentencing system where only 40% of criminals re-offend
unlike America which is one of the worst in the world where 85% of riminals re-offend
canada has the factors in this order
Rehabilitate (fix)
Deterrence (scare)
Sergragate (remove)
retribution (revenge)
in america it is the other way arround
retribution (revenge)
Segrigate (remove)
detterence (scare)
rehabilitate (fix)
they have suck a high recidivism rate because when a criminal is released from jail he is angry because of the harsh punishement created by the retribution (revenge)
and is extremely poorely equiped to go into society. in american jails because rehabilitaion is the least important of all the factors there are little programs in which a criminal can go to get ready to go into society, there are little anger management classes, less job preparations, and less schooling, or they are far less effective
in canada (sorry for the patriotism) it is the complete opposite
the criminals have university courses, job skills, high school courses, and special psycological help available in the jails
however the ONLY downside to our sentencing is that the legal system does not give extreme penalties to the criminal, which may not please the victim of the crime
but it does its job, and that is make society safer.
i think i just wrote you essay for you
