Whats the proper way to clean the heatsink and processor to remove all thermal compound?

Anything petroluem based will remove the initial crusted on thick goopy heat sink compound (Goo Gone works WONDERS!!). Then just some plain old rubbing alcohol to really get it cleaned up. If there are trace amounts left (like microscopic veins lodged in the polishing marks of the cooler) thats fine for normal re-use. If you were overclocking that would be different (so some say, though I've never seen any real difference).

Just be sure to be extra careful with the CPU when cleaning - if it a PGA type (pins on the bottom), the pins are SUPER easy to accidently bend whilst trying to clean the CPU. Use caution. And make sure you discharge yourself (touch something grounded) before you start, other wise you might be cleaning a fried CPU.

Hope that helps.

How To Clean Thermal Compound

Hi. A gentle wipe with an alcohol pad, or acetone if you have some. Some thermal compounds melt into the nooks and crannies and may require a polishing to remove.
