Men love gadgets! Get him a tool or kitchen device that does something in a particularly ingenius way.

My step dad is real big into Jeff Gordon, so every year I get him something that relates to that. Is your step dad a sports fan and really fond of one person or team...get something related to it. And also movies are a great gift. After he opens it, ask him if he would like to watch it with you later that day. It's a great bonding experience to help your step dad feel like he's really a part of the family...he'll feel more like a real dad.
