Peter McWilliams wrote a great book about why consensual crimes in general should be legalized called "Ain't Nobody's Business If You." It has lots of information on why marijuana should be legalized and is available on his website in its entirety for free.

The book was written before this happened, but McWilliams had AIDS and cancer and was prescribed medical marijuana by a doctor in accordance with California state law when the federal government busted him and placed him under house arrest where he died waiting for sentencing.

For one thing, marijuana is illegal in the first place because white men in the 1930s thought it caused black men to want to sleep with white women, and that it made Mexicans crazy. There was a lot of racism involved in making it illegal, so there really is no basis for it in the first place. Is it good for you, or completely devoid of negative health effects? Probably not, but the way it's treated by the federal government is disproportionate to any danger it poses. Check out this article for more detail:

Just my opinion, but the government should not be in the business of legislating morality. In other words, they shouldn't be telling consenting adults what they can and can't do, so long as those adults are not hurting anyone else in the process.
