Shakespeare wrote nearly 40 plays. Nobody can say definitively which were the top four. When people speak of "the four great tragedies," they usually mean "Hamlet," "King Lear," "Macbeth," and "Othello." Almost everybody who is familiar with Shakespeare's work singles out "Hamlet" not only as his greatest tragedy but as his greatest play, perhaps the greatest play ever written by any author. A lot of experts rank "Lear" as a close second.

"Romeo and Juliet" is extremely popular, one of the most frequently performed Shakespeare plays. The same goes for "A Midsummer Night's Dream." "As You Like It" and "Twelfth Night" are also popular comedies. "The Tempest" also gets performed a lot.

The more you read Shakespeare's plays -- or, better yet, go to see live performance -- the more you'll be able to decide for yourself which are his greatest works.

Well, by top do you mean his best plays or his most popular? For most popular, Pandora's got it right.

But his best written plays are a completely different story. In my personal opinion the order for that would be:
1. Othello (best tragedy)
2. King Lear
3. A Midsummer Night's Dream (best comedy)
4. Richard III (best history)
