Do we just let them continue going round until they burn out?

Yes we usually let them go. If they are in a low enough orbit they will eventually reenter on their own. If they have enough fuel, we make them reenter or move to another orbit where they are out of the way. The Chinese shot one down as a test of the anti-satellite weapon and not because they needed to get rid of that satellite.

uhh...to my knowledge, yes that's exactly what we do. There's an entire debris field surrounding the Earth made of the junk we put up there. However, the other option is to bring them crashing down into an ocean, such as in the case of Mir.
