I believe you should mix with diesel, and use only clean (not used) vegetable oil.

The Perkins Prima diesel engine in the Montego was one of the first direct-injection diesel car engines (only beaten to the market by the Fiat Croma 1.9 t.d.i.d).
Direct-injection engines car suffer gumming problems with prolonged use of straight vegetable oil. However, if the oil is properly converted to Biodiesel and mixed with normal (mineral-oil-based) diesel you will reduce the risk of gumming.

Not straight out of the bottle, no. Some very old diesels will handle it, but usually not. It needs a lot of treatment, but it is done by people who use a lot of fuel and can set up a "production line" economically. (And account to HMR&C for the duty). I'd research on "bio diesel" if I were you.

Some vehicles are actually running commercially on bio diesel, usually a mix of 20% bio and 80% petroleum diesel known as B20.

Yes diesel engines run quite well on vegetable oil - probably illegal to do so on the highway - but on your own land it should be OK.

smells a bit odd though!

I doubt it unless you fit a preheater. Doesn't matter what it's fitted in. The only engines I have come across that could run on VO without any mods were the older merc engines.

However what is the point? You need to pay about 60p per litre duty so there is no saving.

no diesel will run on pure cooking oil without a pre heater
you need to mix it with diesel fuel about 70% diesel to 30% cooking oil. and legally you need to pay duty on it . not much
but customs and excise can bee strict
