Yes Johan Santana WILL be traded and NO it is not stupid of the Twins to trade him.
I know he is arguably the best pitcher in the game and most of you who aren't Twins fans and do not follow them all that closely think it is ridiculous. The Twins NEED to trade him this offseason because they have failed to sign him to an extension and once his contract is up at the end of the year, they will not spend the money to sign him with the Yankees and Rex Sox. Trade him now becuase this is the time when you are going to get the maximum for him.
Johan Santana will more than like go to the Red Sox, probably for John Lester, Coco Crisp, and a couple of highly talented prospects. But just becuase they agree on a deal does not mean that it is final since Johan has a no-trade clause in his contract. This means he will be looking for a contract extension more than likely upwards of 6 years and roughly $130-150 million.
I am a die hard Twins fan and I never imagined I would say this but we have to trade Santana now otherwise its one more year with the club and he's off to another team and we have nothing to show for it.

Dear asker,
Although i think it's a mistake for the Twins to not make a run to keep Santana it seems right now that it's inevitable that he's going to get traded. First they are actively entertaining offers (and especially) as they talk to the Yankees who you know has no conscious when it comes to spending money-- the key is that Santana (at age 28) wants a 6 year, $150 million type deal (which the Twins can not afford), but the Yankees can (or one of the other teams trying to get him: Mets, Dodgers,Angels, etc.)
Additionally Santana did have some bad exchanges with the front office last year- so i think his heart doesn't seem very much wanting to return so the Twins want to trade him while they can still get something for him.
i think they should get some young prospects as well as a proven major leaguer like a Robinson Cano.
Kindly,
Nickster

I think yes he will be leaving Minnesota very soon!
Teams like NY (Yankees and Mets), Boston and LA Angels will have the young talent to trade and the cost of having him play for the other contenders in the AL is too steep to not try to prevent the move.
Look for Boston and NYY to put forth a monster offer that is too good to be ignored.
As a Red Sox fan I can't imagine trading away any combination of Ellsbury, Lester or Buchholtz. Crisp I can do without only because I'm willing to bet Ellsbury can come up huge in 2008! But on the other hand how could anyone beat Beckett, Santana, Schilling and Dice-K? in a playoff series!?
NYY, BOS and LAA all have stacked farm systems with plenty of talent to trade away if they wanted to. Its a tough decision for GM's to make, I'm not sure if Santana would have to sign an extension with that team before the deal coul dbe done! I'd hate losing a crop of prospects for 1 year of Santana!

Well I think the Twins management want to get something fro him before his free agent year. They made him an offer of 80 Million for 5 years and he turned them down. The twins are now talking to the Yankees and they may make a deal of players to be traded to the Twins for Johan. You may be surprised at the Talent the Twins will get.

no he wont. agent boras has stated he wont. this is because 1. if a star player is traded before the season it is telling the fans and organization that they dont plan on beeing competitive this season.
2. players always have a higher value at the trade deadline, because certain teams already know they are in the playoff race, and want this to be the year so they will try and better the team at all costs by trading prospects...
3. it just takes to many players to trade for this calabir player, star players arent usualy traded away unless they have to.
Scott Boras said in sports weekly that it probably wont happen

Yes, it is a shame that small market teams have to go through this with their star players year after year. The Twins will probably use this year to regroup (again), and try to load up on as many prospects as possible. It also didn't help that the Twinkies lost Torii Hunter in the same year. What can you do? You just gotta hang in there and expect the best in return for one of the best starters in the game....

I truly believe Santana will be a Yankee.
Although, I DONT see Ian Kennedy wearing pinstripes next year as he probably will be going to the Twins.
Hughes and Chamberlain will be their as well.

yeah, and this point it is almost inconceivable that he wont be traded, id assume the bosox and angels have the inside edge at this point, and at least the twins will be able to get a lot for him
