Check out your local library for origami books, sometimes called crease folding.
the websites below have several patterns to choose from. ( I know they look like the same website, but they go to different sections) You may want to make something that he is particularly interested in, such as lion, car, rhinoceros, elephant etc. I have never made a cake as such, but a candle should be fairly easy.
Kids love origami. My roommate and I made flapping birds for Halloween when the local kids came through the dorm. They were a big hit!
