I haven't read it but I know someone who has and she said its amazing. I think they are making a movie about it.

As for other books similar, the author of the kite runner has another book that came out a few months ago.....also got great reviews.

Omg, I just finished the book yesterday and it is one of the most profound books I have ever read. I cried so many times-- it truly is an incredible tale and everything feels so real-- not like some other cheesy teen book. This book definitely made my top five favorite books. It's funny you ask this particular question because I wanted to find out the same thing for myself.
The following book is not on the same subject, but it had a similar effect on me and it was really good "Nickel and Dimed" by: Barbara Ehrenreich-- It's about a writer who becomes apart of the working class, taking any job she can (wal-mart, waitress, maid) and her experiences. "You need at least two jobs if you intend to live indoors" it just totally changes your perspective on America's working poor. It is non fiction but, it is written passionately and makes you wonder if she'll survive the next chapter.

I have read it, I thought it was extremely good. Very powerful. I also read "A Thousand Splendid Suns" which I found to be equally good, if not better.
