They would investigate it, if there is some corroborating evidence that a crime had in fact been committed.

A court case would fail if the key eye witness retracted their evidence, but then that would only happen if the police had no corroborative evidence to substantiate the allegation.
Why do you feel the need to go to the police? and what makes you think he is not just saying it to elevate himself by making you think he comes from the type of fraternity that are hard.
I think he is confused, the guy probably thinks crime and the people involved with it are glamorous, maybe he just fancies a bash on the Jeremy Kyle show lol...
.Do you really think his uncle would confide in him? and if his uncle is so stupid to do so then he probably has to others, which means plod will be visiting soon..lol Don't get involved, you don't need the stress
IF YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW..
Cops will do nothing without evidence, if you have times or places or where goods or weapons might be recovered from then you stand a chance that they might entertain it.
PS what has your question got to do with the statement under it?

I don't think it works like that...
I think the only person who can report a robbery is the person who was actually robbed or someone speaking on their behalf.
Unless you know where he robbed from or which items he stole, i don't think they will take it very seriously.
They might make an attempt at questioning him but it would be a case of "We have been told you have robbed some place" "Well i didn't" "erm, ok bye then".
They are not going to inconvenience him because of rumours.

"if i go to the police and just tell them my boy friend's step father has robbed...just because my boy friend told me about it. what will the police do?" - They would tell you that your boyfriend's step father can report the crime but you can not.

If his father didn't report it and is not injured or unable to do so, they can't do anything. (IE. If he's not willing to do it, they can't do anything)
