Many people do call him ol'saint nick. Santa Clause is just a nicknamae he picked up, I think.
From my understanding, something I learned in school but forget most of it because it was a long time ago, but somewhere in the world,
[forget where, and this could very well be a legend but i remember a teacher read it out of a book when i was young.]
There was one, either Saint Nick or someone who goes by the name Santa Clause, went and gave needy children gifts at Christmas time.
I dont have a very good memory so please correct me if I'm wrong ;]
[and also I really need help with this question, its been two days and nobody has answered. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AnHCQSE4MBuFSZLqsgqIFaXsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071124225044AAXSSMr ]

Some people already call him by that name. Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick---it's all the same.

Christmas now has nothing to do with the original meaning, which is what allows atheists and agnostics to celebrate it along with the bible thumpers!
