Fish are bagged for 24+ hours on a regular basis, how do you think your lfs gets its fish? If your teacher buys the fish after school one night, keeps it in a place where the temperature is within the range for that species, and brings the fish in to school the next morning there should be no problem if the fish is properly bagged. This means 1/3 water, 2/3 air. I sell fish at auctions all the time, they are bagged for 12+ hours with no problem. One trick is to fast them for 24 hours before bagging.

Properly bagged fish can survive for quite long times if they are properly put up. This requires oxygen to fill the bag's air space. Or the new "breathe-able bags". Some skill and knowledge is also required.(Not likely to be found at a "big box pet store.) So the answer to your question is yes,and probably not.
The answer that states that the aquarium needs to be cycled is absolutely correct. The class should learn about cycling an aquarium before sacrificing any fish.

Its not advisable as there is no filtration in the bag and due to the sealed plastic, there is no gaseous exchange in and through the water surface and out the bag causing the oxygen levels to drop dramitically. Hence taking your fish home as soon as you buy them.
The stress of being in a bag makes a fish produce high levels of ammonia and so the water gets polluted extremely quickly.
A fish may survive a day in a bag if extremely hardy, but could die from the after effects or suffer long term breathing or health defects as a result of it. Its best if your teacher goes out and buys the fish on her lunch break.

you mean, can the fish live in the bag for a day? maybe, but I wouldnt do it. it's going to stress the fish out and could possibly kill it. fish need oxygen and they aren't getting enough from the bag- plus some need warmer temps and the temp may drop in the bag. you want to get it to the tank ASAP (that is, after its floated for at least 20 mins...there are differing opinions). Tell your teacher to research how to take care of a fish tank before she gets one. And tell her it's not a good idea to have the students bring the fish in (only certain fish can live together).

If the fish was just tied with air in the bag then I would not recommend going longer then 5 hours or so.
But, if you buy it from a place that bags them well, filling the bag with oxygen from a tank, they can last as long s 48 hours with no problem! (It's true whether people believe it or not). You can relieve the stress to the fish entirely by keeping the bag in a dark container.

It might and it might not. It really should not be left in the bag all day, unless you are floating the bag in the tank water itself. The bag does not usually have enough air in it for an all day trip. It is really not the best thing to do for the fish. You can if you have to,,,,,,,,,,but I wouldn't think there would be many guarantees with that scenario.
Good luck.

Hi,
Well i dont think so, the fish will probally die from stress. If your teacher is getting one tell her to have a tank prepared in your class. Tell your teacher when he/she buys the fish bring it directly to the classes fish tank. In petsmart plastic bag where you put your fish in to bring home. It will tell you to bring the fish straight home and have a tank ready to put the fish in it.
Leave the fish in the water for 15mins for the tempeture water to get even and so your fish will not counter alot of stress of water differences.
What fish are you getting first of all.
Feed the fish 2-3 times a day as much as it can eat in several minutes.(2-5mins)
Good luck and have fun.
P.S Bring fish straight to fish tank. Do not leave fish in the bag for more than 1 hour or fish may die of stress.

Theres not real time limit. It could last for 10 hours like he said or longer than 24. It depends on the type of fish and how the water conditions are.

is your teacher dumb? this is common sense, tell her how she would feel if they put her in a bag. you need a tank or a nice fish bowl, depends the size of fish.
