umm need help with a math problem?

ok here is the info-
the pages in the yearbook are 11 inches long by 8 1/2 inches wide. the yearbook printing cost is calculated by the area of the photographs and printing, so it is necessary to know each photograph's area. one page of the yearbook contains a photograph which makes up the whole page except for a 1 1/4 inch margin on each of its sides. dont forget to remove margins .thank you.

what is the are of the photograph on the page in square inches?(a picture may be drawn to help sovle this task). show and explain your work please. thank you.

The width of the picture is 11 inches less twice the margin (you have margin on the left and the right). The height is 8.5 inches less twice the margin.

So the area is ( 11 - 2 * 1.25 ) * ( 8.5 - 2 * 1.25 )

I don't know how to put pictures in here, but it's pretty simple to explain.

Subtract 1.25" from the size of the page for each margin. Remember that a margin has two sides, so you must subtract for the top and the bottom, left and the right.

1.25" + 1.25" = 2.5" that you must subtract for each of length and width.

Your picture is 11" - 2.5" = 8.5" long

Your picture is 8.5" - 2.5" = 6" wide

Area = Length X Width so your picture is:

8.5" X 6" = 51 square inches.

the answer is 51 sq. inches because if you take 1.25 off of each side you take 2.5 inches off the width and the height making the area of the photo 6 times 8.5 which =51 sq. inches

=93.5-(27.5)+2x5x1.25
