why does NATO have bright blue helmets? I figure they use them so that badies won't shoot at them, but is there any symbolism behind the color scheme?

The light blue/grey has been established as the international sign for peacekeeping forces. There is no real reason "why" its blue instead or red or some other color, but it was set up to help with a variety of reasons:

1. It helps the troops to easily distinguish themselves in any situation, combat or not.

2. The color is an international mark for a peacekeeping troop, so it helps for other people not to shoot at them so much.

3. It allows people in need or distressed to identify them easily so that they can get help.

The only downside is that it also makes them targets for terrorists and other extremists.

The blue helmets are usually the helmets of the UN peace keeping missions. Blue is the colour of the UN system. NATO is using a light grey colour.
