Close call between Bauhaus and The Sisters of Mercy.

Hard choice. I definitely like Bauhaus and Christian Death as all-time favorites, but some of my favorite newer bands are Frank the Baptist, All Gone Dead, and A Spectre is Haunting Europe (although the last band is questionable if they're actually goth or not, they could just be considered post-punk and they have a lot of indie crossover appeal, although I know plenty of goths like them too).

Goth is one of my favorite genres so it's hard to norrow it down to just one favorite.

I'm gonna go with London After Midnight, but Clan of Xymox is a close second.

Silentium.
If you want to be very very technical, Within Temptation (even though I love 'em) doesn't play gothic music, they're symphonic metal.
