Carpenters earn an average of $1120 less per month than deigners at a furniture factory in Smithville. The factory employs 3 designers and 15 carpenters. Let x represent the average month pay of a designer.

Which of the following functions correctly shows the relationship between the monthly payroll (P) and the wages of these employees?

(1). P = 3x + 15( x - 1120)

(2). P = 3(x - 1120) + 15x

(3). P = 3(x - 1120) + 15(x - 1120)

(4). P = 3 + x +15 + (x - 1120)

(5). P = 3(x)(15)(x - 1120)

Let D = pay rate of designers and C the pay rate of carpenters.

We know that Carpenters make 1120 per month less than Designers, so

C = D - 1120

Since there are three designers and fifteen carpenters, the payroll amount P is

P = 3 D + 15 C

Substituting...

P = 3 D + 15 ( D - 1120 )

So it looks like (1) is the correct choice.
