4.5 is the median average of the data set.
There are several ways to find the average.
Your data set = 4,5,5,5,5 or one 4 and four 5’s with 5 elements in the data set
The most typical method is the arithmetic mean, often simply called the mean. You count the number of entries and then add up the numbers and divide the resulting number by the number of entries; this would give you an answer of (4+5+5+5+5)1/5 = 4.8 (This is what Crescent... thought you were asking).
When finding the mode you look for the most commonly appearing number which in your data set would be 5.
The median is the middle of the data set in this case the median average would be 4.5, the number between 4 and 5.
There are actually 13 other ways to figure out the average but those were the three that I was taught in grade school.
The geometric average would be the number of elements as a root of the product. In this case it would be (4 X 5 X 5 X 5 X 5) ^ 1/5 = 4.78176.
The others like harmonic mean, weighted mean, midrange… can be found in this Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Average
- But what you want is the MEDIAN: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median
The math is probably too complex for you so you need to go to the Medians in descriptive statistics section (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median#Medians_in_descriptive_statistics) which will explain it in terms that don’t require calculus). I am not saying you are dumb, I am mererly trying to put it into a context that most people could understand and most people haven't had calculus.

the median would be 5. In fourth grade we learned a trick to finding the median. First you need to put all of the numbers in order from least to greatest. then one by one you cross off one from each end. The number you are left with in the middle is the median. If there are two numbers in the middle, add them up together and divide by two to find the average. Hope that helped! :)

The answer is 5.
4.5,5,5,5
There are two numbers, 5 and 5 because 4.5 and 5 are crossed out. Oh! You already know that the answer is 5 because two numbers are the same numbers. Don't need to do 5+5/2.

Median is 5. Eliminate each pair of outliers until you are left with 1 number. So drop 4 & 5, then 5 & 5 and you are left with 5.

Median=Middle number in the middle of the row...
The middle number is the third one, 5. Therefore, the median is 5.

5, because when the list of numbers is put in order, 5 is the one in the very middle.
