Well, I've only read one book by my own. I'm not a fan of reading and writing. But I love learning new vocab and learning how to use English properly. I also feel the need to be better than anyone around me in English (I know, that's kind of selfish :P) and know more than the average person (Grammer vocab...etc). Is that enough to major in English?

I know that my English sucks now. But I didn't even go to high school due to health and family problems. And I don't know how I passed middle school, because I couldn't study anything. I had to learn everything on my own. So I think my English is ok considering my situation. I just got my GED and planning to study Enlish at a community college here in Florida. I am just not sure if I should do so because I am not into reading and writing. Do you think I should pick another major and that I shouldn't major in English? Does everyone studying English like reading and writing?

Thanks in advance!

I don't mea that I HATE reading and writing. I just not the type that would write poems, novels and stuff like that. I'm also not the type that would enjoy reading a novel once a month or something like that...

There is a lot of reading and writing in English as you need to take at least 3 literature courses. Why not check out ESL (English as a second language)? You can help others learn English, and the focus is on grammar and vocabulary. Don't give up! You'll find something.

I don't know of any college English program which focuses on vocabulary; every one that I've heard of is essentially a literature program. If you were to major in English, you would not be reading a novel a month, but perhaps several per week. From what you've said, this would make you miserable. I think you need to think a little more about what you want to accomplish in your life before choosing a major.

I think that you should look into a career as an editor. With your love for vocabulary and grammar, you would be great at it!

English majors are all about reading, comprehending, and analyzing writing. They read constantly and study up on Shakespeare. I do not think that you would like to be an English major, but it is great that you have that skill!

Good luck finding your potential career!

Maybe look into languages. Most English words come from other languages. Nothing improved my vocabulary as much as taking Latin school.

Otherwise, etymology (basically word history) might interest you.

As you would expect English requires lots of reading and writing. Literature does also, but maybe more reading than writing.

yeah, I don't think an English major would be appropriate for you. That is all they do is read and write stuff.

But - you can always start on an English major track, if you don't like it, try something else.

Maybe Etymology? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etymology Not sure if that is a major.
